Spinning and Weaving Classes

      at Sheep Street

Spinning: We offer classes in the use of the drop spindle and
spinning wheels. Anyone who buys a wheel from us gets at least two
free lessons in its use. In addition, ask about other incentives that we
offer our customers.

If you are having spinning problems or have questions, feel free
to drop in; there is no need to wait for a formal class.

Introduction to Spinning: This is an introduction to
the oldest way of creating yarns. We will explore spinning history,
cover fiber preparation (washing fleece, carding, and teasing), spindle
spinning, look at the different types of spinning wheels, and give
students time to try the various styles. Students may bring a spindle
or purchase one at Sheep Street. The fibers will be supplied. This is
a 3-session class. Cost is $50.00. Taught by Tim Ackerman or
Nancy de Caprariis

Blending/Carding Workshop: This class will cover the basics of blending fibers and/or colors using both the drum carder and hand cards. Students will end up with sufficient blended fiber to spin and knit a stunning pair of warm mittens. Cost of the class ($45.00) includes the fibers and a copy of the new Ashford Book of Carding. Students must bring or purchase their own hand cards. Taught by Tim Ackerman.

One Saturday, 1:30 - 4:00, Jan 27

Spin a Bunny: Donna Jo Copeland has raised rabbits for most of her life, has specialized in Angora for many years, and has written a book entitled Let's Spin a Bunny. This class will introduce you to the steps you need to take to harvest the fur, card and/or blend the angora with other fibers, and spin it to the size and type of yarn you wish. You don't have to own a bunny to take the class (and we have angora available here), but if you do have a bunny, bring him or her along, as well as your wheel and other needed equipment. $45.00.

One Saturday, 1:30 - 3:30, Feb 3

Dyeing Workshops: Learn a variety of both basic and unusual dyeing techniques on both yarn and roving, using Australian Gay Wool Dyes. Taught by the effervescent Donna Jo Copeland, each workshop will focus on different colorways. Cost of each workshop includes a handout, and a package of fiber. $45.00 each workshop.
